Note about my Reviews

Dear Authors: The reviews in this blog are only personal opinions. I have absolutely no background in literature, writing or reviewing. I am a Librarian (actually a Library Technician for those who care OR know the difference) with a love for a good story. The opinions in the reviews are ONLY my OPINIONS. I am not commenting on the writers ability since well -- I am not a writer and never will be. If you are the author of any of the books reviewed here, my opinion is just that and not a judgment against you!

Description:Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.

One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black

The Good Stuff
  • Truly fascinating and completely unique tale about vampires. Shouldn't really be surprised as this is from  Holly Black - one of the more gifted storytellers around
  • Holly's prose is poetic, yet real.  I highlighted so many passages that I think I went through a whole pack of post it notes.  This women sure knows how to turn a phrase. And FYI,  Holly loved the blue hair you were sporting at BEA - you looked awesome!!
  • Passionate, yet chaste. Perfect for the intended audience
  • Gavriel in an intriguing love interest
  • Tana is strong and does the right thing, no matter the cost. She doesn't expect a man to save her (yeah, I know - I'm a mom - I always think in terms of if the heroine was my daughter and what kind of role model she would be -- I blame Twilight for making me think this way --  yup still want to slap Bella upside the head for being such a wuss)
  • Very dark

The Not So Good Stuff
  • I felt a little lost sometimes and not sure what was going on. However, please take this with a grain of salt as I just got back from BEA and am totally exhausted
  • Something was missing - at this point in time, I cannot tell you what -- but just that the heart of the story was missing I guess
  • Dad was such a total jerk -- but than again, I kinda understood why he made the decisions he did

Favorite Quotes/Passages

"And Tana finally understood how the wildness of the Eternal Ball was the wildness of grief, the intoxicating dance of carnival, where one leaves oneself at home and becomes something else for a night, hoping that the old skin will still fit when one comes back to it in the morning."

"Circuses tame tigers. Get them to jump through flaming hoops. Those tigers are really nice to their trainers, I bet. Bump them with their big heads. Roll on their backs like  house cats. But if they're hungry enough, those tigers are going to eat those same tigers they were nice to."

"Vampires were fairy tales and magic. They were the wolf in the forest who ran ahead to grandmother's house, the video game big boss who could be hunted without guilt, the monster who tempted you into his bed, the powerful eternal beast one might become. The beautiful dead, la belle morte. And if, after gorging temselves, they became less lovely, if they became bloated and purple and horrible, then they hid it well."

4 Dewey's

One of my favorite people, Terri, grabbed me a copy of this at BEA (Book Expo America).  This is awesome as I hadn't been able to grab a copy for my pal Christa who wanted me to pick it up

  1. Very well developed characters, interesting plot and not predictible. Sometimes these vampire books are "same ole same ole" but the storyline actually took it to another level. Well worth the time and money..and I am glad I found a new author to follow!
