Note about my Reviews

Dear Authors: The reviews in this blog are only personal opinions. I have absolutely no background in literature, writing or reviewing. I am a Librarian (actually a Library Technician for those who care OR know the difference) with a love for a good story. The opinions in the reviews are ONLY my OPINIONS. I am not commenting on the writers ability since well -- I am not a writer and never will be. If you are the author of any of the books reviewed here, my opinion is just that and not a judgment against you!

Audio Book Reviews: Beautiful Darkness, Beautiful Chaos and Beautiful Redemption by Kami Garcia and Margerat Stohl

Beautiful Darkness (Caster Chronicles #2)
by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Hachette Audio
Narrated by Kevin T. Collins
Buy from Indigo

Description: Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.

Sometimes life-ending.

Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems

Random Thoughts
  • Excellent 2nd book in a series, and we know that this fact is pretty surprising, most second books suck
  • Fast paced and funny as hell
  • Excellent narator
  • Plenty of surprises that you didn't see coming
  • Thoroughly enjoyed the addition of Olivia
  • Two Librarian main characters
  • Still get a kick that the Librarian's name is Marion and she is a kick ass Librarian  - yup a female Giles
  • Enjoyed the glimpses into the past of certain characters
  • On many occasions while walking the dog I would laugh my ass off while walking the dog and listening to this - even everyday chores were made better by listening to this
  • My favorite thing about this series is the characters.  I enjoyed each and everyone of them - including the bad guys
  • Okay the angsty stuff really irritated the heck out of me -- but hey I am a 43 yr old women who has been married for 20 years
  • Wanted to smack Lena on many occasions
  • I adore Link - love the strong friendship between him and Ethan
  • As soon as I finished listening to the 2nd book, I immediately downloaded the thirs
  • Honestly I think this would be a hard one to read due to the writing style, but listening to it has been a blast

Favorite Quotes

“High school sucked. It was a universal truth, and whoever said these were supposed to be the best years of your life was probably drunk or delusional.”

“A vegetarian? Are you insane? That's worse than bein' a quarter demon!”

“So he's like a human compass? As far as superpowers go, that's pretty lame. You're like the Caster equivalent of Aquaman.”

Beautiful Chaos (Caster Chronicles #3)

by Kami Garcia and Margerat Stohl
Hachette Audio
Narrated by Kevin T. Collins

Description: Ethan Wate thought he was getting used to the strange, impossible events happening in Gatlin, his small Southern town. But now that Ethan and Lena have returned home, "strange" and "impossible "have taken on new meanings. Swarms of locusts, record-breaking heat, and devastating storms ravage Gatlin as Ethan and Lena struggle to understand the impact of Lena's Claiming. Even Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals is affected - and their abilities begin to dangerously misfire. As time passes, one question becomes clear: What - or who - will need to be sacrificed to save Gatlin?
For Ethan, the chaos is a frightening but welcome distraction. He's being haunted in his dreams again, but this time it isn't by Lena - and whatever is haunting him is following him out of his dreams and into his everyday life. Even worse, Ethan is gradually losing pieces of himself - forgetting names, phone numbers, even memories. He doesn't know why, and most days he's too afraid to ask.
Sometimes there isn't just one answer or one choice. Sometimes there's no going back. And this time there won't be a happy ending

Random Thoughts
  • Couldn't stop listening, needed to find out what was going to happen
  • Broke my heart - was crying my eyes out near the end of the book
  • Can I say again, I adore all the characters - Amma, John, Olivia, Ethan, Makin, etc
  • Fast paced and once again love the humour
  • Nice character development
  • Less whiney Lena and Ethan
  • Would have liked more about John's background
  • Loved the story but really feel this could be a brilliant series if it was only two book and more added books about some of the backgrounds - once again got irritated by the angst - but again I am 43 and a wee bit jaded
  • Once again as soon as I finished the book I needed to know what happened next and downloaded the final book in the series
  • Caught a few moments of the movie after I finished this book and it was truly painful to watch - did the producers, directors etc even read these books - it was so bad I had to turn it off
  • One word - Linkubus!
  • A tad depressing

Favorite Quotes/Passages

"Book banners are no better than book burners.”

“I wanted to find a place to hide from all of it, where the nightmares and the rivers and reality couldn't find me. For me, that place was always inside a book.”

“Knowing you don’t have much time left changes things. You get kind of philosophical. And you figure things out—more like, they figure themselves out—and everything gets real clear. Your first kiss isn’t as important as your last. The math test really didn’t matter. The pie really did. The stuff you’re good at and the stuff you’re bad at are just different parts of the same thing. Same goes for the people you love and the people you don’t—and the people who love you and the people who don’t. The only thing that mattered was that you cared about a few people. Life is really, really short.”

Description: "Is death the end . . . or only the beginning?" Ethan Wate has spent most of his life longing to escape the stiflingly small Southern town of Gatlin. He never thought he would meet the girl of his dreams, Lena Duchannes, who unveiled a secretive, powerful, and cursed side of Gatlin, hidden in plain sight. And he never could have expected that he would be forced to leave behind everyone and everything he cares about. So when Ethan awakes after the chilling events of the Eighteenth Moon, he has only one goal: to find a way to return to Lena and the ones he loves.
Back in Gatlin, Lena is making her own bargains for Ethan's return, vowing to do whatever it takes -- even if that means trusting old enemies or risking the lives of the family and friends Ethan left to protect.
Worlds apart, Ethan and Lena must once again work together to rewrite their fate, in this stunning finale to the Beautiful Creatures series

Random Thoughts
  • Man Ethan and Lena were seriously whiny I almost stopped listening to it at the beginning
  • It picked up half way through and I had to find out how it ended
  • I have said it before, this would have been brilliant if it was only two books and companion pieces about some of the secondary characters
  • Way, way too much -- I just want to get back to Lena crap -- again I am a jaded 43 yr old wife of 20 years
  • Enjoyed Xavier's character and Ethans trip through the underworld
  • Everytime they mention Angelus ( Pronounced different) I kept thinking of the Angelus from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel - kept thinking they are pronouncing his name wrong
  • Nauseating lovey dovey stuff
  •  Uneven - at times I didn't want to stop listening and than I wanted to throw the phone across the wall in frustration
  • Love Link and Ridley - can't help myself
  • One word Amma
  • Loved Ethan in the first 3 books but was irritated with him in this installment
  • Not enough of Link, John, Makin, Liv, Marianne etc - just way too much oh I miss Wade, Oooh I miss Lena - actually gagged a few times
Favorite Quotes/Passages

“You need help, and that's what books are for.”

“As I followed him along the sharp black stones, I could hear Link's voice in my head. "Bad move, man. He's gonna kill you, stuff you, and add you to his collection of idiots who followed him back to his creepy cave”

“Your bird drinks whiskey and eats tobacco?"
The old man frowned."Just be lad he doesn't like eatin' scrawny boys that don't know their way 'round the Otherworld.” why oh why - so quick and a let down for such a fabulous character
